RESEARCH THEMES
The research within HAN Biocentre is closely linked to the School of Applied Biosciences & Chemistry, and with the Biobased Innovations and Drug Discovery lectorates. We often act in a multi-disciplinary way, in which the available expertise can range from analytical chemistry and medicinal chemistry to microbiology and fermentation technology, and from biochemistry, cell biology, molecular biology and molecular physiology to bioinformatics and data science.
Biobased Research
We develop knowledge in the field of the fermentative production of biomolecules out of residual flows (bioconversion) and the isolation of biomolecules from biomass residual flows (biorefinery). We are particularly specialized in the application of fungi and yeasts for the production of biobased building blocks such as microbial oil, biofuels and (alternative) proteins, and in the development of high-quality chemical separation and analysis techniques for biorefinery.
Bio IT, Data Sience en AMR
We continue to build on our knowledge about the interpretation of sequence data for applications in Agro, Food and Health (including in connection with the analysis of biodiversity, biological production and soil quality), and we design mining strategies and software tools for applications in the same domain. We are also working on reliable test methods to support the search for durable means of protecting crop against fungal infections.
Drug Discovery
We focus specifically on the research phase within the drug development process. In the search for new compounds with an increased chance of success we focus on natural compounds (semi-synthesis) and protein-protein modulators in combatting common diseases. And we develop advanced test systems (organoids) that can be used to determine a) the bioactivity of compounds in the light of certain diseases and b) ADMET parameters.
