The health care sector is undergoing vast changes. While the care needs have changed and increased, the financial means and staff capacity have decreased. Innovations are therefore needed for people to receive safe and quality care in the future. One of these innovations is skill mix. Skill mix is an important management strategy to counterbalance the changes in health care by deploying staff more efficiently. In this respect, the aim is to maintain or even increase the quality of care.
Research and education contributing to sustainable care
The research focuses on the effectiveness of skill mix in a broad sense. The overarching aim is to contribute to more efficient and quality health care. Educational institutions, professional practice, professional associations and the government all require more knowledge on the effectiveness of skill mix as well as insight into the factors that influence its implementation. Issues encountered in practice form the starting point for this and the knowledge and experience gained flow back into education and professional practice. The ultimate goal is sustainable health care.
Research themes
Miranda Laurant and her research team focus on the following themes:
- Effectiveness and suitability of skill mix and the circumstances under which it can be implemented (skill mix models)
- Skill mix with respect to the labour market (career perspective, inflow and outflow of health care providers)
- Skill mix and education (competencies)
Bridge between science and practice
The research group combines scientific insights with knowledge about topical social developments and experiences from professional practice. It also uses knowledge of common social issues that influence the organisation of health care and civil society organisations. In this way the researchers create a bridge between science and practice. They help to achieve the goals of this research group, namely innovation, knowledge development and knowledge circulation.
