Qualities of Teachers
Teachers as designers, pedagogical thinkers, team players: the roles that teachers play in their organisations change rapidly. Practice-based evidence to support changes in the profession can help schools and informal places of learning to develop their professionalism and monitor its effects. Our research aims to find evidence for this, both in theory and practice.
Changes in the profession
The duties and tasks of teachers are constantly changing in today’s society. Teachers are now expected to take on more roles and more responsibilities, the professional standards and status of a career in teaching need to be elevated and the variety of work-study placements and learning pathways are on the rise. This means a higher variety of work roles for teachers to choose from.
The teacher as …
In addition to transferring knowledge and coaching pupils and students, the teacher’s job profile now also includes the following activities:
- Critical pedagogical thinker
Reflecting on the fundamentals of education (what, with what goal) - Designer
Creating learning processes and curriculum components (how) - Researcher
Learning to understand, test and substantiate the results of practice-based situations and changes (why) - Team player
Being part of a team, an organisation and the profession as a whole (where)
