Program

The Sustainable Energy program is based on industry needs. We’ve closely collaborated with our industry partners so you get in-demand skills. What’s more, you get to work on real research projects. You’ll be up-to-date on all the developments in the field of sustainable energy.

Sustainable Energy in a nutshell

Sustainable Energy is a full-time track that runs for 3 semesters (18 months). You follow a series of practice-based modules and conclude with a major project. The track is part of the Master in Engineering Systems, so for some modules you join students from other engineering tracks.

Semester 1 is about Systems Modeling and Applied Control. In semester 2 you focus on Sustainable Energy Systems and an elective module: Smart Power Supply or Hydrogen Technology. Semester 3 is all about your major project. Here you investigate a real-life problem in an industrial or research setting.

Systems modeling and applied control

In semester 1 you follow the modules Systems Modeling and Applied Control. Put the theory you learn into practice during labs and real-life sustainable energy projects. Also, fine-tune your communication and research skills.

Compulsory modules

In Systems Modeling you learn how to model systems using the white-box model. Applied Control is about analyzing a system or model.

Academic calendar

The academic year runs from September to August. In that time you have 42 weeks of education. The rest of the time you have holidays.

Modules and lecture days

Here you can find a weekly schedule of all the modules for the Master Engineering Systems in semester 1 and 2. This includes the modules for the Sustainable Energy track.

Track-specific modules

In semester 2 you follow 2 track-specific modules. The Sustainable Energy Systems module is compulsory. For your 2nd module you choose between Smart Power Supply or Hydrogen Technology.

Modules

In Sustainable Energy Systems you learn how to analyze systems and apply suitable control strategies. Smart Power Supply is about how energy is supplied and distributed in our changing energy system. Hydrogen Technology focuses on the role hydrogen can play in the energy transition.

A good match?

Want to discover whether the Sustainable Energy track of the Master in Engineering Systems is a good match for you? Whether it fits with your previous education and experience? Visit us at an upcoming Open Day and find out. Or arrange an online meeting with a staff member.

Investigating an energy issue

Your 3rd and final semester is devoted to your major project. That’s where you investigate an actual energy issue. Where? At a company or research institute.

The major project is a final test of your ability to manage a project. And where you demonstrate your skills in communicating, reporting and presenting. You get the support of a HAN staff member and a supervisor from the company or institute.

Master of Science

After 1.5 years of hard work, you’ve earned your Master of Science in Engineering Systems. Congratulations! The program you've completed is accredited by the Accreditation Organization of the Netherlands and Flanders (NVAO). That means you now have an internationally recognized degree. Ready to get your career moving in the energy sector?
