Maintaining my traditions is important to me, regardless of where I live.
Overcoming Homesickness and Building a Fulfilling Life
Challenges and Triumphs
The biggest challenge I faced in my first year was overcoming homesickness. I missed my family and friends immensely and often thought about going back. The only remedy was time and patience; it got better with each passing month. Although I still have moments of sadness, I understand that they are temporary.
I felt proud of my achievements when I completed my first year with no resists and received my diploma. It was a significant moment for me.
Extracurricular Activities
I have been involved in volunteering at an art gallery in Arnhem, where we met regularly to discuss the gallery’s performance. Additionally, I participated in a dance group and performed with them. These activities significantly impacted my experience, especially when I started working and enjoyed a certain level of financial freedom.
Advice for New Students
My advice to new students is to be open to all opportunities and proactive in seeking activities, jobs, and volunteering possibilities. You never know what the outcome might be or where it could lead you.
For example, I attended an exhibition opening in Arnhem where I networked and met a woman who connected me with someone from France. This connection helped me find accommodation for my study abroad. One conversation can be incredibly beneficial in the future.
Final Thoughts
One important lesson from my first year is to always keep your belongings close. I learned this the hard way when I was robbed while traveling from Paris to Arnhem because I wasn't paying close attention to my luggage.
Overall, my first year has made me very excited about what the future holds and the adventures in the next few years.
