For students, HAN staff and external participants. You want to obtain an internationally recognized certificate of English proficiency. And you already have an advanced level of English (at least C1). We assess this with a short online placement test.

This course prepares you for the English exam developed by Cambridge University, the leading language and culture institute in England. Depending on your level, you prepare for one of the following exams: C1 Advanced (CAE) or C2 Proficiency (CPE). Most parts of these exams are the same, just at a different level.

The course consists of 5 sessions, each focusing on one part of the exam:

Session 1: Writing
Session 2: Use of English
Session 3: Reading
Session 4: Listening
Session 5: Speaking

During the course you'll have the opportunity to hand in and receive feedback on writing assignments you complete at home.

The course starts on Thursday 24 April 2025 in Nijmegen. Classes are scheduled from 18:30-20:45.

The next course starts in autumn 2025 in Arnhem.
During class we study sample Cambridge exams. You’ll get to know the different parts of the exam. Then you practice in class and get feedback and tips. If you wish, you can practice further at home.
Study materials will be provided for practice in class. Want even more practice? You can purchase a bundle of sample exams. Your instructor will advise you during your first class about which bundle to buy.
The Cambridge exam is administered at different locations in the Netherlands. You can choose the most suitable location and format (paper-based or computer-based).

The exam consists of 4 sections:

Reading and Use of English

Writing

Listening

Speaking

You need to register and pay for the exam yourself. Visit the British Council website for costs, locations and exam dates.
After the course, you receive a certificate of participation from the HAN Language Center. And you’ll be fully prepared to take the Cambridge exam at C1 or C2 level. Once you pass the exam? You’ll receive a Cambridge Certificate that’s valid for life! Below you can see what that means.

C1 Advanced (CAE)
This certificate shows that your English is at the level expected of a business professional or undergraduate university student. You can communicate in social, academic and professional settings.

C2 Proficiency (CPE)
This certificate shows that your English is at the level of a highly trained, near-native speaker. You have mastered English and can use it fluently in demanding research, academic and professional situations. This is the highest Cambridge English qualification.
