Early Drug Discovery Education Track (EDD-Track)

Strengthening the current pharmaceutical training offering with innovative Early Drug Discovery (EDD) life-long learning courses
Motivation
This project strengthens the current plarmaceutical training offer for professionals with innovative Early Drug Discovery (EDD) life-long learning courses. These are intended for employees of companies in the pharmaceutical sector at post-HBO and post-WO level. The content of the course is determined based on the demand of companies active in EDD and is developed by the leading institutions Radboud University and HAN University of Applied Sciences in collaboration with business trainer Elevate and Pivot Park.
Purpose of the project
The aim is to develop an Early Drug Discovery education track (EDD-track), consisting of 8 post-HBO/WO courses and aligned with the wishes and needs of the business community. The courses have a flexible size and can be followed independently.
Method
The project is divided into a number of work packages based on the GAP analysis developed by Pivot Park. A GAP analysis compares the current situation with an ideal situation or objectives, which reveals shortcomings and opportunities for improvement.
The GAP analysis was developed by Pivot Park and consists of an online tool with a survey based on the ‘Small Molecules and Biologics 4D Map (Drug Discovery, Development and Deployment)’.
Based on this, companies in the pharmaceutical sector are asked what their training needs are, the level and subjects of the courses are determined and collaboration is sought with experts from the field who provide input on the content, case studies and working methods. Newly developed courses will become part of the life-long learning programs of Radboud University and HAN University of Applied Sciences in order to guarantee the sustainable provision of these courses.
After the project, 8 courses at HBO/WO level will have been developed in the field of Early Drug Discovery, which closely match the needs of the business community. The impact of this includes:
• In-house training or further training of employees of pharmaceutical companies leads to better employees and higher production of those companies
• Employees of pharmaceutical companies are continuously introduced to new state-of-the-art methods and innovative techniques, which will contribute to their productivity
• The international character of the courses will have a recruiting effect on potential employees for pharmaceutical companies
• A better range of courses makes pharmaceutical companies a more attractive employer.

Drug Discovery
A start-up project in the drug discovery phase has between a 5-10% chance of making it to the research phase. At that stage, the success rate is about 10% to make it to market. Thus, a start-up drug project has a very small chance of eventually reaching 'the shelves'. The researchers of this professorship contribute to drug development.
