The importance of play for the health and social practitioner

Play is one fundamental pillars for children’s development that secures mental functioning, learning, social connection and a healthy personality. However, in recent research it has evidence the decrease of play and raise of issues such as psychopathologies. How can students and professionals tackle this and incorporate play into our practice? This lecture will offer a review of the basis of play in child development and the role of the practitioner facilitating this not only for children and young people but also for adults. This space will welcome students and professionals from diverse disciplines such as arts therapies, social work, psychomotor, and pedagogy. Marcela can be asked questions from 10.00-10.30h, after the presentation of Liliana.

Art Therapy with Forcibly Displaced People

This lecture explores how art therapy provides a healing space for individuals and communities affected by displacement. It highlights the therapeutic power of creative expression in addressing migratory grief and resilience, fostering emotional well-being, and rebuilding a sense of identity and connection. The session delves into practical approaches to using art as a medium to access internal strengths and promote collective resilience, emphasizing the importance of community, cultural sensitivity and transculturality in supporting forcibly displaced populations. Hammoudi's Dream

Mohammed, nicknamed Hammoudi, is 14 when he flees Syria. He and his older brother leave their mother and sisters behind, walking from Syria to Europe. It's a long and arduous journey during which they encounter dangerous obstacles such as minefields, wild animals, and violent border guards. Mohammed's journey seems like a nightmare. Meanwhile, he continues to dream of a future as a doctor. However, once they arrive in the Netherlands, learning the language proves challenging, and procedures take a long time. He hasn't seen his mother in over 3 years. Will his dream come true, and will his mother and sisters finally come out of Syria? In this lecture by documentary maker Els van Driel, we watch this short documentary, and Els shares insights into her work and the filmmaking process.
