Training in Responsible Research

Here you will find an overview of responsible research training courses at universities of applied sciences. We offer basic training for researchers, team training and training for students. The training courses contribute to awareness of the importance of research integrity. You will learn what exactly we mean by research integrity in applied research. You will also be given tools to recognize and discuss research integrity in your work.

How were the training courses developed?

In 2018, by signing the Dutch code of conduct for research integrity, the universities of applied sciences committed themselves to providing responsible research training to their researchers. However, they have not systematically offered such training, leaving researchers dependent on university programs.

To address this, 7 universities of applied sciences (Fontys University of Applied Sciences, Avans University of Applied Sciences, Hanze University of Applied Sciences, InHolland University of Applied Sciences, Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences, Utrecht HU University of Applied Sciences en HAN University of Applied Sciences) – in collaboration with the Association of universities of Applied Sciences –  developed a training course in Responsible Research.

TETRIAS

In order to determine the objectives and content of the training, researchers from 7 Universities of Applied Sciences were interviewed about their experiences with integrity issues. This research project was funded by ZonMW and called TETRIAS project (Translating Researchers’ Experiences into Training on Research Integrity at Universities of Applied Sciences). The details and results are available in 'How to set the agenda for training in responsible conduct of research using the target audience as a narrative guide'.

The insights from the interviews formed the learning outcomes of the training courses, which include a basic and a team training course. Existing training materials from projects such as The Embassy of Good Science and VIRT2UE were adapted or new materials were developed as needed.

RITS

In addition, with the help of a Comenius grant and under the project name Research Integrity Training for undergraduate Students’ (RITS), a training course in research integrity was developed for and with university of applied sciences students. The educational material developed was carefully prepared and is available as open access via edusource
