Training in Research Integrity

Here you will find an overview of research integrity training courses at Universities of Applied Sciences. We offer a basic training for researchers, a team training and training for students. The training courses contribute to awareness of the importance of research integrity. You learn what exactly we mean by research integrity in applied research. You will also be given tools to recognise and discuss research integrity in your work.

How have the training courses been developed?

In 2018, by signing the Dutch code of conduct for scientific integrity, the Universities of Applied Sciences (UAS) committed to providing responsible research training to their researchers. However, UASs have not systematically offered such training, leaving researchers dependent on university programs.

To address this, 7 UAS's (Fontys, Avans Hogeschool, Hanze Hogeschool, Hogeschool InHolland, Hogeschool van Amsterdam, Hogeschool Utrecht en HAN University of Applied Sciences) – in collaboration with the Association of Universities of Applied Sciences –  developed training in ‘Responsible Research’.

TETRIAS

To determine the training objectives and content, researchers from 7 UASs were interviewed about their experiences with integrity issues. This research project was funded by ZonMW and called the TETRIAS-project (Translating researchers’ Experiences into Training on Research Integrity at universities of applied Sciences). The details and results are available in 'How to set the agenda for training in responsible conduct of research using the target audience as a narrative guide'.

The insights from the interviews formed the learning outcomes of the training courses, which include a basic training and a team training course. Existing educational materials from projects like NRIN and VIRT2UE were adapted or new materials were developed as needed.

RITS

In addition, with the help of a Comenius grant and under the project name ‘Research Integrity Training for undergraduate Students’ (RITS), training in research integrity has been developed for and with hbo students. The educational material developed is carefully prepared and available in open access via edusource.

The training not only covers judicial and regulatory knowledge, guidelines, and codes of conduct but also focuses on recognizing and addressing ethical dilemmas. A complete syllabus and trainer's manual for both courses are now available.
