Karin Struijs

We conduct practice-oriented research together with students, aimed at responsible and smart use of the living nature. We work closely with companies that support the same ambition.

Our research focuses, for example, on the production of biobased raw materials based on fermentation, the development of separation methods for full use of residual flows from agriculture and horticulture, the development of new medicines by adapting substances obtained from plants, the development of alternative test methods to replace animal experiments or on the design of methods and software that can make use the enormous amount of available (genetic) data.

    Research themes

Within HAN BioCentre we focus our research on three main themes, namely: Biobased Research, Bio-information|Data Science and Drug Discovery. We fill in these themes through a number of specific research lines

    Collaboration

We work with partners in various ways: through contract research, a joint subsidy project, a tailor-made course, or through facility sharing.

We will gladly discuss the research options at the HAN BioCentre. Students can join us through an internship, a minor project or a graduation project.

    Our team

We develop scientific knowledge aimed at addressing questions from practice. We work in multi-disciplinary teams based on clearly different areas of expertise.

Events

Networking Event Theme Tables Key Technologies and Digitization

The Theme Tables Key Technologies and Digitization will hold their biennial Networking Event on Thursday, April 24, 2025. With a contribution from biocentre manager Carlien Verberne. It is the opportunity for researchers at colleges and others interested in practice-based research to share knowledge, gain inspiration and make valuable contacts. The main theme of the day is the National Technology Strategy (NTS), with special attention to the ten priority key technologies.

Installation lecturer Drug Discovery Dennis Löwik

The installation will take place in Nijmegen on Thursday, June 12, 2025. The title of his installation speech is 'From molecule to medicine: from inspiration to innovation'. Dennis joined the Bio-organic Chemistry group at Radboud University Nijmegen in 2001, where he has held an associate position since 2006. His research focuses on smart materials and targeted drug delivery systems. Since 2024, Dennis combines his work at Radboud University with his work at HAN.

Installation lecturer Biobased Innovations Christof Francke

Christof Francke will be installed as lecturer on Thursday, July 3, 2025. In addition to the official part, a biobased market will take place at Laan van Scheut 2 in Nijmegen. Christof graduated in enzymology, but has since gained expertise in molecular biology, systems biology, bioinformatics and data science. Since 2013, he has been connected to HAN BioCentre successively as researcher, associate lecturer and now lecturer.
