FAQ

HAN will arrange your student visa for you if you are accepted into:

• a full-time bachelor program
• a full-time master program
• an exchange program (1 semester/academic year)

HAN will NOT arrange a student visa for you if you are accepted into:

• a language course
• a short course

For a short course or language course, you might be able to come to the Netherlands on a short stay visa (up to 90 days). You need to arrange this yourself. See the info on short stay visa on the website of the Dutch Immigration and Naturalisation Service (IND)

Do you hold a temporary or long-term residence permit from another EU/EEA country? Then you still need a student visa from the Netherlands to be able to study at HAN for a longer period of time.

Yes, but you need to make sure to send in your application on time and submit all of your visa documents on time. Also, you need to get accepted into the program of your choice. For more info, see Transfer Students.

For a bachelor program you need a suitable secondary school certificate. You might also need to have passed specific subjects. For a master program, you need a relevant bachelor degree. For more details, see Admission Requirements.

By showing sufficient results on a language test. We accept the IELTS, TOEFL, Cambridge, Pearson and LanguageCert tests. In some cases, you can get an exemption from the language test. For example, if you have done an International Baccalaureate or have studied in a certain English-speaking country. Go to Admission Requirements for more details.

Most likely not. Our degree certificates represent our complete curriculum, so almost all our students have to start in the 1st year. You might be able to get some exemptions though. You can only apply for exemptions once you have started the program. Please note: exemptions will not shorten the length of the program, but will give you more free time during your studies. No. HAN does not charge an application fee. You can apply for our degree programs and courses for free. Changed your mind and want to cancel your application? Make sure you cancel on time. That way you avoid paying unnecessary tuition or course fees. See also FAQ below about cancelling your application.

Check your mailbox. After applying in Studielink you’ll receive an email from HAN confirming your application. This can take about an hour. You’ll get this email at the email address you entered in Studielink. 

Haven’t received an email? Not in your junk folder either? Contact us so we can see what’s going on.

• After your application in Studielink, you need to do a few things to finalize your enrollment. 
  At hanuniversity.com/enroll you can find a checklist. Sometimes you need to do something, and sometimes you need to wait until we’ve processed something. Make sure you start on time! 
• When your enrollment is finalized, it will say “Enrolled” in Studielink. For the September intake that will be in or after July. For the February intake that will be in or after January.
• You’ll also get a mail from HAN saying your enrollment is finalized. That mail is sent in or after July (September intake) or in or after January (February intake). It will be sent to the email address you entered in Studielink. 

That depends on a number of things. Like which program you choose, whether you start in September or February, and where you’re from. Go to When to Apply for an overview of all the deadlines.

EU/EEA students 

For September starters, you can cancel your application up to 31 August without having to pay anything. For February starters, you can cancel up to 31 January without having to pay anything. If you cancel after these dates, you have to pay at least 1 month of tuition fees. 

Non-EU/EEA students 

Cancel your application before you pay the financial guarantee and you won’t have to pay anything. What if you’ve already paid the financial guarantee? Some costs will be deducted from your refund. This depends on when you cancel: 

September intake

• After 1 June: visa application fee will be deducted if HAN already applied for your visa
• After 1 July: administration fee and visa application fee will be deducted
• After 1 August: administration fee, visa application fee and 1 month of rental cost will be deducted

February start

• After 1 November: visa application fee will be deducted if HAN already applied for your visa
• After 1 December: administration fee and visa application fee will be deducted
• After 1 January: administration fee, visa application fee and 1 month of rental cost will be deducted

The cancellation policy is also attached to the invoice of the financial guarantee. Please keep in mind that if you cancel after 1 February or 1 September (depending on when you start your program), you also have to pay at least 1 month of tuition fees. 

Yes, certainly! Because after applying, your enrollment is not yet finalized. You can apply for up to 4 degree programs. That can be handy if you’re doubting between programs. Then, after you’ve applied (and after the application deadline) you have time to decide which program you’d like to follow. Have you decided? Then please cancel the other applications. 

Are you an exchange student? Or are you from outside the EU/EEA and need to pay the financial guarantee? And are you under 30? Then yes, HAN Housing will arrange your student accommodation.  

• Bachelor and master students:  Housing will only be arranged for 1 semester if you start in February and 1 year if you start in September. After that, you have to find your own accommodation.

• Exchange students: Your housing will be arranged for the full duration of your exchange (1 semester).

No. Most of the student rooms have a private bedroom and shared facilities, such as kitchen, shower and toilet. So, our rooms are not suited for families. Also, pets are not allowed. No exceptions can be made. For more info, go to our info on HAN Housing.

No. There is currently a housing shortage in the Netherlands. If you’re from the EU and starting a bachelor or master program, you’re expected to find your own accommodation. Start your search early. We recommend at least 6 months in advance. For tips and advice, go to Find a Student Room on our website.

Are you from outside the EU/EEA? And do you have outstanding results in your prior education and a high level of English? Then you might be able to get a scholarship at HAN. There are conditions though and only a limited number of scholarships are available. For more info, go to Scholarships.

No. The HAN scholarships are € 2,500 per term or year. Your cost of living will be at least € 1,250 per month, so from € 15,000 per year. Add tuition fees to that, and you need around € 25,000 in total per academic year. So, if you are granted a scholarship worth € 2,500 per academic year or term, you still need around € 20,000 to € 23,000 per academic year to cover your costs. For more info, go to Scholarships.

First apply for a degree program. If you meet the conditions for a HAN scholarship before the deadline, you’ll be automatically invited to apply. For more info, go to Scholarships.

HAN does not provide student loans and cannot help you with funding your studies. DUO is the official organization that arranges student loans in the Netherlands. You can go to the website of DUO to check if you are eligible to get student finance in this way. Also, keep in mind that you might be able to get a student loan in your home country. 

As an international student you are not eligible for a student travel card. Only Dutch nationals and students who have a solid (financial) link with the Netherlands can get a student travel card. Go to the website of DUO to check if you are eligible to get a student travel card Also, students do not get reduced rates for public transport in the Netherlands. You can purchase a season ticket though. See our Public Transport page for more info.

Yes, you should definitely come to the HAN Intro! You’ll get lots of valuable info about studying at HAN and living in the Netherlands. You’ll also meet your classmates and learn all the ins and outs of your degree program. And, it’s great fun! More info about the HAN Intro.

Are you starting in September 2024? Your classes will start in the week of 2 - 6 September. Keep in mind that you'll have the introduction in the week before that, so 26 - 30 August.

Are you starting in February 2025? Your classes will start in the week of 3 – 7 February. Keep in mind that you might have an introduction in the week before that, so 27 – 31 January.

What about holidays? You can see all the holiday weeks in the HAN academic calendar. Note: these are the dates for the entire university. Your program may have slightly different dates. So also check out the page of your own program on Insite. 

What about your timetable? Timetables are usually ready just before or in the week of the introduction. Your program will give you more info about your timetable and how to read it on Insite. Insite is HAN’s online environment. You can log in to Insite using your HAN account.

After you create a HAN account, you’ll get your own HAN email address. You’ll receive important info from your degree program at this email address. Once you start your program, your HAN account will also give you access to Wi-Fi, Insite, OSIRIS and other digital facilities at HAN. 

Create your own HAN account in the HAN account portal. There you can also find step-by-step instructions. 

If you have not met all the enrollment requirements, you cannot log in to see your timetable or to use Teams, for example. So make sure you've completed all the steps on the To Do List.

In the HAN academic calendar you can see when the academic year begins and ends and when you have holidays. Note: these are the dates for the entire university. Your program may have slightly different dates. So also check out the page of your own program on Insite. Insite is HAN’s online environment. You can log in to it using your HAN account.

You’ll hear about that from the staff of your program. Are you starting in September? Then you'll most likely hear from your program after 15 August. Are you starting in February? Then you'll probably hear from your program after 15 January. That’s when most programs group the students into classes.

When your schedule has been set, you can find it on Insite under your program. Insite is HAN’s online environment. You can log in to it using your HAN account. When will my schedule be published? For most programs that start in September the schedules are put together after 15 August. Programs that start in February usually have their schedules ready after 15 January. But don’t worry, your schedule will be published on Insite before classes start!

Do you need extra space or guidance to develop your talents? For example, because you’re studying with a disability. Or because you want to combine your elite sport or business with your studies. No problem! Let us know what's going on, then, if you like, we can work together to see what you need and what is possible in your degree program. Do this before you begin your studies so you can get off to a good start.

Good to know:

• Don't worry, registering your special circumstance won’t affect your admission.
• Your registration will go to the student counselor and the student advisor of your degree program. That information is not readily shared with lecturers or classmates. Whether you want that will soon be up to you.
• You can indicate on the form whether or not you would like to meet with your student advisor. So you can also choose to only register your special circumstances, but not do anything else about it for a while. Then, if you do need help at a later time, it's just a little easier to raise the alarm.

Are you from the EU/EEA or Suriname? Your tuition fees are € 2,530 for the 2024-2025 academic year and € 2,601 for the 2025-2026 academic year.

Are you from outside the EU/EEA? Then your tuition fees range from € 8,750 to € 10,270 for the 2024-2025 academic year. The tuition fees for the 2025-2026 academic year will be published sometime in January 2025. The exact amount depends on the program.

Are you already living in the Netherlands on a Dutch residence permit? Or do you hold a long-term residence permit from another EU/EEA country? You might be eligible for the lower tuition fees. Do you hold a temporary residence permit from another EU/EEA country and do you have a non-EU/EEA nationality? You pay the non-EU/EEA tuition fees.

EU/EEA students 

It’s best to pay your tuition fees or organize a digital payment authorization before 1 August (September intake) or 1 January (February intake). Officially you have until 31 August (September intake) or 31 January (February intake) to do this. Only when all admission requirements are met on time, including tuition fee payment, will you have access to the educational facilities. Haven’t paid yet or organized your digital payment authorization? Then you may receive emails from us reminding you to pay your tuition fees. 

Non-EU/EEA students 

You need to pay the tuition fees (part of the Financial Guarantee) before 1 June (September intake) and before 1 November (February intake).

Yes, but only if you are an EU/EEA student and have a checking account in the Netherlands or at a SEPA (Single Euro Payments Area) bank.  

The procedure is as follows: 

• Enter your payment details in your Studielink account before the start of the academic year. 
• Submit the digital payment authorization form. 
• Authorize HAN to deduct the fees in monthly installments. This will be 10 installments for the September intake, and 5 installments for the February intake. 

Please note: a one-off administration fee is charged each academic year if you choose to pay in installments. This is included in the 1st installment and amounts to € 24.00.

You can arrange for someone else to pay your tuition fees for you. Your parents, for example.

Go to Studielink and click on "Who is paying the tuition fees = Someone else". You’ll receive an email with a link that you need to send to the person who will pay your tuition fees. They can use this link to enter their payment details so that the tuition fees can be deducted from their bank account.  Please note that the bank account must be from an EU country in the euro area. They can also transfer your tuition fees manually to HAN. If they do, they clearly need to mention your name and student number in the comments field. If we receive a manual payment from someone other than you, we will ask you for your agreement with this by email.

Yes. But not right away. One hour after entering your payment details, the 'Change payment details' button will appear on the 'Payment' tab. Then you can change your details. What you can change depends on when you entered your payment details. Read below what applies to you.

1. You entered payment details before 1 October 2024
You can change your bank account details at any time in Studielink if the authorization is in your name. Not in your name? Then complete and sign the Change of Payment Details Form (PDF) and send it to cicdesk@han.nl.
Want to change your method of payment? From installments to a single payment? Fill in the above form. From a single payment to installments is not possible until the following academic year when you re-enroll via Studielink.

2. You entered payment details on or after 1 October 2024
You can change the method of payment or payment details at any time in Studielink. So you can change your bank account number, indicate that someone else will pay for you or change from paying in full to installments and vice versa.

Note: Did someone issue an authorization for you? This person can change the payment details themselves. They can do so using the payment link they received earlier. You can also find the payment link in Studielink under 'Messages'.

Are you paying in installments? Go to the direct debit schedule for the dates.

Are you paying the entire amount in one go? Then the full amount will be debited on 25 September. If you’re starting in February, the full amount will be debited on 25 February. 

All of HAN's bachelor and master programs are accredited by the Accreditation Organisation of the Netherlands and Flanders (NVAO). Our International Business program is also accredited by the FIBAA and EFMD. Find out more about Accreditation of degrees at HAN. 

HAN does not appear in the best-known university rankings. That's because it's a university of applied sciences. It is ranked within the Netherlands through the National Student Survey (NSS). Go to our page on Ranking to find out more.

EU/EEA students have the right to work in the Netherlands. Non-EU/EEA students can only work if they get a work permit or are self-employed. But please keep the following in mind. If you are studying full-time, you’re expected to be available for all educational activities. Not just classes, but also group activities, excursions etc. So, you need to be available from 9am to 5pm from Monday to Friday. Occasionally, you might have an educational activity in the evening or on the weekend. Some international masters are offered in part-time. In that case, you’ll have more time to work. Your classes will be scheduled on 1 or 2 days a week.
